Wanted: A better traffic plan

This intersection at S.D.N.B. Vaishnav College is badly in need of a pedestrian signal

The intersection of Chambers Colony Main Road, S.D.N.B. Vaishnav College for Women, near the level crossing gate road, and Grand Southern Trunk Road, Chromepet badly needs a foot overbridge.

The area around the intersection is home to a good number of commercial establishments and prestigious educational institutions, so there is continuous flow of vehicles. In the absence of a FOB many pedestrians are put at risk while crossing the busy road.

The traffic signals at the intersection facilitates flow of vehicular traffic towards Chennai International Airport from Tambaram Sanatorium and vice-versa. Motorists coming from Chennai International Airport can take a right turn to enter Chambers Colony Main Road and from Tambaram Sanatorium to enter S.D.N.B. Vaishnav College for Women level crossing gate road. Similarly, motorists from Chambers Colony Main Road and S.D.N.B. Vaishnav College for Women level crossing gate road can take a right turn to enter GST Road towards Tambaram Sanatorium and Chennnai International Airport.

“Crossing the road is dangerous as the intersection does not have a pedestrian signal,” said S. Subramanian, a senior-citizen and a resident of Chromepet.

“We have to be vigilant and watch like a hawk as motorists throw caution to the wind,” said G. P. Babu, a social activist.

He says as motorists negotiate the intersection at a good speed, chaos prevails at the intersection.

A State Highways Department official has assured look into this issue.
