Suspected of being a thief, youth beaten up; four held
Four men of Planet Mercury Society in Sector 9, Ulwe, have been arrested for allegedly thrashing an 18-year-old boy, suspecting him to be a thief. The incident occurred in the morning of June 3 when Javed Hussain Shaikh entered the society to ask address of another society.
Javed, a resident of Chembur, in his statement to the Nhava Sheva police, said on May 31, after a fight with his mother, he left his house. He then started staying with his friend Satwinder Singh at Breejdham Society in Sector 9, Ulwe. On June 3, his cousin from Mumbra had come to Kurla station and he had gone to pick him up. After alighting at Bamandongri station around 2 a.m., they started walking towards Mr. Singh’s house, but got lost.
“Unable to locate the society, they claimed, they decided to seek help from someone. Javed entered Planet Mercury Society while his cousin waited outside. While a man on a two-wheeler was guiding him with the direction, a man from the society asked him his name and started thrashing him. Later, Javed claimed, more society members joined in thrashing by tying him to a fire pipe. The men used iron rods and sticks to beat him,” police inspector Dattatrey Kindre, Nhava Sheva police station, said.
Since Javed claimed that he was searching for Mr. Singh’s house, someone from the society brought Mr. Singh from Breejdham society and thrashed him as well by tying him up. “The society people should not have taken the law into their own hands and should have informed the police. We have booked eight people and have arrested four of them,” Mr. Kindre said.
The assault that allegedly started around 2.30 a.m. went on till 6 a.m. till the police reached, rescued them, and admitted them to NMMC hospital in Vashi.
