Officials from the district administration and Non-Government Organisation members rescued nine bonded labourers from a poultry farm near Mohanur here.
Twenty years
The officials said the nine labourers, a couple, their five girl children and two boys, had been working at a poultry farm in Pudupati village here for the past twenty years. According to members of READ, the NGO that raised the complaint, the family has been working in the farm for over 20 years and they have taken an advance of ₹50,000 from its owner.
“The couple managed to pay ₹30,000 and the family was made to work as bonded labourers for the remaining amount. Amongst the children, two are differently-abled and they were also put to this torture,” said P. Palanisamy, project coordinator of READ. Based on their complaint, revenue and police officials rescued the family from the place.
Sub-Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati said, “initial inquiry and preliminary evidences suggest that it is a case of bonded labour. The family has been rescued and shifted to a safer place. They will be issued release certificates and further inquiry will be conducted.”
