Ensure compliance, farmers tell Cauvery Management Board
Welcoming the Cauvery Management Board’s directive to Karnataka to release water from the dams into the Cauvery, Thanjavur District vice-president of Agriculture Labour Union V. Jeevakumar has urged the board not to be content with issuance of direction but also ensure compliance.
The board must meet once in 10 days till October-end to make sure that the upper riparian State released water as per the Tribunal award. The lower riparian State would be able to carry on with agricultural operations without any hitch and tide over the drinking water problem in the Central districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Union Territory, he said.
Meanwhile, coordinator of Cauvery Rights Retrieval Committee P. Maniarasan claimed that Karnataka’s assurance could not be taken for granted, citing its stand that water would be released in Cauvery provided the monsoon did not fail.
He said Karnataka was adopting dilatory tactics to avoid releasing Tamil Nadu’s due share of Cauvery water since the commencement of the water year.
