Election model code of conduct ends

The Model Code of Conduct, which was in force since March 10 after the Election Commission of India (ECI) had announced the schedule for the 2019 general elections, ended on Sunday.

After the ECI announced on Sunday that the Model Code of Conduct ceased to be in operation with immediate effect, Collector K Veera Raghava Rao said he would conduct the weekly public grievance redressal meet on Monday.

Public who wished to meet the Collector in person and seek redressal to their grievances could attend the meeting, he said in a press release on Sunday. The model code of conduct continued to be in force even after the completion of polling on April 18 in the State as polling process was in progress in other parts of the country.

“Now the results of the general elections to the Lok Sabha and Assemblies and by-elections to Assembly seats had been declared, the model code of conduct has ceased to be in operation with immediate effect,” the ECI has said.

After the end of polling in the State, people made a beeline to the Collectorate on every Monday to present their grievances unaware that the model code of conduct was still in force. They either presented the petitions to the Superintendent of Police or dropped them in the complaint box kept at the Collectorate.
