Lena Dunham Calls Out Trolls Who Body-Shamed Her Over Her Wedding Photos

Girls‘ star Lena Dunham took to Instagram yesterday to call out trolls who body-shamed her online. The actor revealed she’d received a string of “gnarly” comments about her weight after she shared a photo from her wedding for her 2.8 million followers earlier in the week.

Speaking to her fans, Lena pointed out that while she often ignores hate she sees on social media, on this occasion she felt the need to speak up. “I’ve created such intense boundaries with the internet over the past few years,” she started. “It’s a little too easy to feel the glow of support and forget about the cesspool lurking behind it–so I took a peek, and saw some gnarly sh*t, most not worth responding to or even sharing with you.”

She continued: “But one narrative I take issue with, largely because it’s a story I don’t want other women, other people, to get lodged in their heads is that I should somehow be ashamed because my body has changed since I was last on television.”

“When will we learn to stop equating thinness with health/happiness?” the 35-year-old added. “Of course weight loss can be the result of positive change in habits, but guess what? So can weight gain.”

Lena went on to highlight that, in the older photos of herself she was being compared to, she was “in active addiction.” Now, four years on and sober, it’s understandable and even healthier that she’s no longer the same person she once was.

“In the four years since I’ve gotten sober and begun my life as someone who aspires toward health and not just achievement. These changes have allowed me to be the kind of sister/friend/daughter that I want to be and yes—meet my husband (who, by the way, doesn’t recognize me in those old photos because he sees how dimmed my light was),” she said.

“I say this for any other person whose appearance has been changed with time, illness, or circumstance,” she said. “It’s okay to live in your present body without treating it as transitional. I am, and I’m really enjoying it.”

Plenty of fans and celebrities alike took to the comments section to show their support for Lena. “This is just so beautifully said. And I thank you for putting it out there,” said Lily Collins, while someone else commented “Love your body and all the beauty in it!”
