Fern Britton, 63, and Phillip Schofield, 58, were once friends who fronted This Morning together for 10 years. In his new book, he detailed a fallout between the pair and said she didn’t text him when he came out as gay.

When I came out, she didn’t text me. She did text Steph though

He wrote: “When I came out, she didn’t text me. She did text Steph though, which was really kind.”

Phillip made the announcement on his Instagram page back in February, telling fans his wife of 27 years Stephanie Lowe and their daughters Ruby and Molly had been supporting him.

As part of a lengthy statement, he said: “My family have held me so close.

“They have tried to cheer me up, to smother me with kindness and love, despite their own confusion, yet still I can’t sleep and there have been some very dark moments.”

“I am feeling pain and confusion, but that comes only from the hurt that I am causing to my family.

“Steph has been incredible – I love her so very much. She is the kindest soul I have ever met.”

Following his announcement, Fern said on talkRADIO: “We haven’t seen each other for a very long time or spoken for a while.

“I’m glad for him. It’s none of my business. He’s getting on really, so, good. It’s terrible that people have to hide who they are.”

She added: “I feel for his wife. Steph’s a lovely girl and, you know, that’s difficult – as I’ve been talking about difficult transitions and processing stuff for me, it will be the same for her.”

In his autobiography titled Life Is What You Make It, Phillip went on to detail an argument he had with Fern behind-the-scenes on This Morning in 2009.

He claims the pair clashed about the content of a show and said his co-host accused him of “meddling”.

Phillip wrote: “I walked back into the makeup room and calmly said, ‘Please don’t do that to me again’.

“I think, for whatever reason, that was the point Fern decided she didn’t want to do This Morning any more.”

Express.co.uk has contacted a spokesperson for Fern Britton for comment.

The presenter went on to say he had a cheeky nickname for Fern, Minty M***e, which viewers didn’t know about.

Philip said he gave her the name after she dropped a bottle of mint sauce on the floor and it went up her nightdress.

A decade on from their feud, the presenter added he “misses” Fern “deeply” and said he had tried to make their friendship work over the years.

After leaving the show, Fern was replaced by Holly Willoughby.

The host admitted he couldn’t have come out as gay on This Morning if it wasn’t for his best friend and co-star by his side.

“[Holly was] absolutely vital, couldn’t have done it with anyone else, I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to be sat beside me,” he divulged.

“We had a big lead up, Holly was one of the first people I told when I knew what I had to do, she is such a wise person.

“She has got such a calm sensitive aura to her, at home everyone was saying, ’It’ll be fine’ and Holly was saying at work, ‘It’ll be fine’, she was the only one that knew at that time at work.”
